San Jose, Calif. – Forward Jack McInerney pulled one back in the 89th minute, but the San Jose Earthquakes held on for a 2-1 victory on the back of two first-half goals on Sunday afternoon at rain-soaked Avaya Stadium.
The Timbers had the better of the created chances against the Earthquakes, including 10 shots in the first half. In total, Portland doubled San Jose’s shot attempts, 16-8. Portland's Diego Valeri and Fanendo Adi combined for eight shots.
On a bang-bang play, the Quakes jumped out to a 1-0 lead off the boot of striker Chris Wondolowski in the 30th minute.
