PORTLAND, Ore. – Playing its third game in seven days, the Portland Timbers defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 Saturday night at Providence Park. Jack McInerney scored first for Portland and Fanendo Adi delivered a second half brace for the victors. Chris Wondolowski scored a late stoppage time penalty kick for San Jose.
Making his first start of the season, McInerney gave Portland the lead in the 52nd minute when he outfought a San Jose defender in the box before beating San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham. The goal was McInerney's third goal of the season.
