An injury-depleted Portland Timbers (1-0-3) team was taken to task by Atlanta United (3-1-0), losing 5-1 in their first visit back to Mercedes-Benz stadium since their defeat in MLS Cup 2018.

The Timbers came into the match against Atlanta United off of back-to-back losses against LAFC and St. Louis City SC, and dealing with a whole host of injuries. The Timbers were without eight first team players for the match: Evander, Yimmi Chara, Dairon Asprilla, Felipe Mora, Sebastian Blanco, Cristhian Paredes, David Ayala, and Eric Miller.
However, starting goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic made his return to the starting XI after missing the first three matches of the season through injury.
