In a busy final day of the 2016 Rio Olympics Women's Soccer group stage matches, Canada beat Germany 2-1 behind a brace from Melissa Tancredi to clinch the top spot in Group F play and advance to the knockout round. It was the first-ever victory for Canada over Germany in their history.
After two wins in their first two matches that assured the Canadians of advancing to the next round, Thorns FC captain Christine Sinclair was rested for the match and did not appear against Germany.
The Canadians will now play the runner-up of Group G in the tournament quarterfinals on Aug.
