Tommy Maddox weighs in on Steelers quarterback drama

Ben Roethlisberger’s role in Mason Rudolph’s development has become the topic of some debate since Roethlisberger’s prickly comments about his potential successor as Steelers quarterback last week.

Some think Roethlisberger should put his ego aside and take the third-round pick under his wing for the good of the team. Others feel he has no obligation to mentor a guy who could eventually take his job.

Former Steelers quarterback Tommy Maddox is something of an authority on the situation. He lost the starting job to Roethlisberger in 2004 because of injury, and he seems to have faith that his successor will strike the right balance with Rudolph despite a lukewarm reaction to his selection initially.
