The Steelers are prepared to name Randy Fichtner to replace Todd Haley as offensive coordinator, pending final approval of his contract, a team source told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The decision to name Fichtner, an original member of Tomlin’s coaching staff, will help maintain stability with one of the top offenses in the NFL.
Fichtner and offensive line coach Mike Munchak, who has declined a second interview with the Arizona Cardinals to remain with the Steelers, were considered the top internal candidates to replace Haley. Neither have been coordinators in the NFL.
Since Bill Cowher became head coach in 1992, the Steelers have hired four of their previous seven offensive coordinators from within the organization, including the three previous to Haley — Mike Mularkey (2001-2003), Ken Whisenhunt (2004-2006) and Bruce Arians (2007-2011).
