NEW ORLEANS – The third preseason game long has been the most significant in the NFL as starters see their most extensive play before the regular season.
It can be significant for many reasons, of which the Steelers again discovered Friday night.
Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell looked in tip-top form in their only preseason play so far, but another significance occurred when Cam Heyward was carted into the locker room with a right ankle injury packed in ice. The Steelers also lost tackle Marcus Gilbert to a left elbow injury.
That they did win their first game this summer, beating the New Orleans Saints 27-14, comes as little solace if Heyward and/or Gilbert are lost for any amount of time in the regular season, which starts in 16 days.
