PITTSBURGH - After an initial 53-man roster that was short on cornerbacks, the Steelers have fortified the position by acquiring Ahkello Witherspoon in a trade with the Seahawks, sources confirmed to ESPN.
Witherspoon, 26, signed a $4 million, one-year deal with the Seahawks in March to compete for the starting left cornerback job, but D.J. Reed moved from the right to the left side, making Witherspoon a trade candidate. The Steelers take on just $1.5 million of his salary.
NFL Network first reported the trade.
He was taken in the third round by San Francisco in 2017 and started 33 of 47 career games with the 49ers in four seasons.
