Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier was discharged from the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute and will continue his treatment on an outpatient basis through UPMC, the hospital announced Thursday afternoon.
Shazier sustained a spinal cord injury in a Dec. 4 game in Cincinnati and had spinal stabilization surgery two days later at UPMC.
Shazier maintained a presence around the Steelers after his injury. He spoke to the team two days before Christmas at the team’s facility on the South Side and was a regular visitor at practices throughout the playoffs.
Shazier was in a wheelchair on each of his visits to the Steelers facility and to Heinz Field, where he watched games, but teammates said he remained in good spirits.
