It looks like the Steelers are about to lose a partner from their ownership group.
WBNG in Binghampton, N.Y. reported Monday that David Tepper has finalized a deal to purchase the Carolina Panthers after multiple sources named him as the leading candidate to take over the team from Jerry Richardson last week. The TV station said the deal is worth between $2.1 and $2.5 billion.
Tepper, founder of hedge fund Appaloosa Management, bought a 5 percent stake in the Steelers in 2009 and has deep Pittsburgh roots. He attended Peabody High School, then went on to earn degrees from Pitt and Carnegie Mellon.
