ORLANDO, Fla. — It’s been more than 11 years since Randy Fichtner last called the plays in a football game. His most recent experience came when he coordinated the offense for the University of Memphis for the final time in a game at the University of Texas El Paso in November 2006. A few weeks later, Fichtner got a phone call from Mike Tomlin, who asked Ficthner to be a part of his original coaching staff.
Fichtner coached the Steelers receivers for three seasons and the quarterbacks for the past eight seasons, all the while wondering if he’d ever get a chance to coordinate an offense of his own in the NFL.
