The two starters at safety last season were Sean Davis and Mike Mitchell. Mitchell has been shown the door, along with J.J. Wilcox and Robert Golden. To say the safety position is going through a revamp is putting it lightly.
Mitchell was the free safety last year, while Davis was the strong safety. Davis struggled mightily in 2017. He’s going into 2018 getting the first crack at free safety this time, which does fit his skill set a bit better.
His leash will be short, however. The Steelers drafted two safeties this year, Terrell Edmunds (Virginia Tech) in the first round and Marcus Allen (Penn State) in the fifth round.
