James Reilly, 71, and his father-in-law, John Ford, 98, both veterans who share a home in Point Breeze, disagree on the merits of the NFL’s recently announced new policy on player protests during the national anthem.
“The NFL should’ve just let it happen,” Mr. Reilly, who was drafted into the National Public Health Service Commissioned Corps during Vietnam, said about the kneeling. “Fans could express their displeasure.”
His father-in-law felt differently. “My personal feeling is that everybody should stand,” said Mr. Ford, a Navy veteran. “That’s the least they can do. If it weren’t for the vets they wouldn’t be getting what they’re getting in the NFL.
