Paul Smith, the chief of a Cecil Volunteer Fire Station who posted a derogatory comment on Facebook about Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, resigned Tuesday, he said.
Chief Smith post used a racial slur directed at Mr. Tomlin after the Steelers coach explained the team's decision to remain in the tunnel during the singing of the national anthem in Chicago on Sunday.
"I resigned my position," Chief Smith said. "The media dragged my fire company and township into this, as well as my family. I regret what I said deeply and I am not the racist the media portrays me as.
