Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez has committed suicide in prison Wednesday morning, the Massachusetts Department of Correction has told the Boston Globe.
The 27-year-old Hernandez was serving a life sentence in the 2013 killing of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd.
A jury found Hernandez not guilty of first-degree murder in the killings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado last week.
Corrections officials said Hernandez was discovered hanging in his cell at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts at approximately 3:05 a.m., according to the Globe.
“Mr. Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population unit,” the statement said.
