Ben Roethlisberger and the terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad RPO

Run-Pass Options (RPOs) are all the rage in the NFL right now, and it is easy to understand why. An RPO gives the team the option to run or pass on the play based on what the defense is doing after the ball is snapped. The RPO almost always is based around a simple read as well, making the quarterback’s job a very straight forward one.

The Steelers used RPOs with Ben Roethlisberger and Le’Veon Bell when Todd Haley was the coach. They brought them back for 2020, but there is a pretty big problem with the Steelers RPO usage.
