AHN doctors to join UPMC staff in evaluating concussions at Steelers home games

Doctors from Allegheny Health Network will join rival UPMC at all Steelers home games this season to assure compliance with a new concussion program jointly developed by the National Football League and the league’s players’ association.

UPMC doctors have long attended to Steelers injuries, including concussions. Now, two AHN doctors will be on the sidelines as independent monitors of the home and visiting team players to assure that head injuries and other neurological injuries are identified and treated promptly.

The addition of independent monitors was an NFL and players’ association policy change that became effective in July.
