Gregory Polanco homered and doubled, Vance Worley allowed one unearned run and the Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-3, on a cold Wednesday night at PNC Park.
Worley and four relievers finally tamed the Cubs’ offense after allowing 14 runs in the previous two games. The Pirates got enough done against Cubs starter Jason Hammel to let Worley pitch with a lead.
Arquimedes Caminero pumped 100-mph fastballs past the Cubs during a miniature blizzard in the seventh that made the tough task of contacting his offerings even harder. Jared Hughes allowed two runs in the eighth, but Tony Watson bailed him out of trouble and, with Mark Melancon unavailable, completed a six-out save.
