The final pitch Tyler Glasnow threw Friday night represented a departure from his arsenal. It had the speed of a changeup, 87 mph, and indeed Kolten Wong was out in front of it. But it moved the opposite direction, in toward the left-handed Wong instead of away from him.
Glasnow throws a slider now. He started throwing it this week during flat-ground sessions with Kyle Crick. Pitching coach Ray Searage and assistant pitching coach Justin Meccage encouraged him to try it in a game. He was going to start with one. He threw six.
“I just needed another pitch,” Glasnow said.
