ST. LOUIS — Starling Marte, the Pirates' starting left fielder, exited in the third inning of Wednesday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals after suffering a hand injury.
Trainer Todd Tomczyk checked on Marte during his first at-bat of the night, looking at Marte's left hand, but Marte remained in the game. He popped out to the first baseman.
After his second at-bat, another pop-up to the right side of the infield, Marte looked down at his hand again and said a few words to first-base coach Nick Leyva, who signaled for a substitution. Sean Rodriguez replaced Marte.
