PHILADELPHIA — One by one, the Pirates are turning the page on 2016. The ballclub on Tuesday jettisoned right-hander Gerrit Cole and catcher Chris Stewart to the 60-day disabled list, where they will spend the remainder of the regular season. The offseason now is nearing.
When Cole woke up Tuesday, the morning after his five-run, two-inning start at Citizens Bank Park, and felt his elbow still sore, he knew his season was over. Hours later, before a 5-3 win against the Philadelphia Phillies, Cole tugged on the bill of his sweat-stained cap and tried to summarize a year in which he three separate injuries and went to the DL three times.
