Ron Cook: If outfielder Austin Meadows is staying in big league, the Pirates need to play him

Austin Meadows remained with the Pirates Saturday when Starling Marte returned to the active roster. That’s good.

Meadows didn’t start Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park despite hitting .448 with a 1.345 OPS in his first seven big-league games. That’s bad.

Gregory Polanco started in right field despite suffering through a 3-for-28 slump and playing horrendous defense. That’s bad.

Polanco was dropped from second to seventh in the batting order. That’s something, right? That’s good, I think.

The Pirates lost to the Cardinals, 4-1. That definitely was bad.

I would have liked the Pirates’ chances a little more if Meadows had started instead of Polanco, whose batting average has dropped to .
