LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Last month, the Major League Baseball Players Association hinted at frustration, amid a slow free-agent market, at the use of revenue-sharing income by the Pirates and Miami Marlins. On Tuesday, it took things a step further.
The union filed a grievance with MLB against the Pirates alleging misuse of revenue-sharing funds. The Tampa Bay Times, which first reported the grievance Tuesday morning, said the grievance also included the Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays and Oakland Athletics.
Pirates president Frank Coonelly called the grievance “patently baseless.”
“We look forward to demonstrating as much to the Arbitrator if the MLBPA continues to pursue this meritless claim,” Coonelly said in a statement.
