According to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, the Pirates have shown interest in acquiring 1B Mike Napoli and OF Shane Victorino from the Boston Red Sox. Napoli, who obviously would be an upgrade defensively for the Pirates at the 1B position, has been terrible offensively this season: .205/.301/.372. He has 11 home runs, and just 33 RBIs on the season. He is in the last year of his contract with Boston, and is making $16 million this season.
The move seems counter productive for a club that needs to prioritize a bat in the line up that can be counted on to produce consistently.
