Report: Melky Cabrera 'a consideration' for the Pirates

The Pirates have been quiet in free agency this offseason, but that may be changing with pitchers and catchers set to report to spring training in less than two weeks.

FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman reported Thursday that Melky Cabrera is “a consideration” for the club.

Cabrera, an outfielder, split last season between the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox. He hit .285 with 17 homers and a .746 OPS in 156 games.

The 33-year-old could help the Pirates fill the void left by Andrew McCutchen’s trade to the San Francisco Giants last month.
