The path from the Dominican Republic to upstate New York to Pittsburgh isn’t especially well-trodden, but when Fausto Severino was looking for a place to pursue his baseball career and his education, Pittsburgh and Point Park felt like home.
Perhaps Severino’s foray into baseball took a slightly different route than he imagined while growing up in Santo Domingo. Today, Severino, 40, is the Latin American crosschecker for the Washington Nationals, helping one of MLB’s most high-profile franchises sign players in a region known for its baseball talent.
In his role, Severino, who is based in Florida, essentially serves as a filter between the area scouts and the Nationals’ vice president of international operations.
