Pittsburgh Pirates News: Jordy Mercer Activated

The Pirates starting shortstop hasn’t played since August 14 when he left the game early against the Minnesota Twins. The now 32-year-old was placed on the disabled list with a calf strain. Now that he is off the disabled list, he’s batting eight in tonight’s lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals.

ROSTER MOVE: Jordy Mercer has been reinstated from the 10 day DL and the Pirates have designated Sean Rodriguez for assignment.

The veteran is hitting .262/.329/.397 and has been worth 1.2 wins above (WARP) according to Baseball Prospectus. With Adeiny Hechavarria getting the bulk of the playing time at short in Mercer’s absence, Kevin Newman still on the roster, Adam Frazier being red hot, and Kevin Kramer looking like he should be promoted, it’ll be interesting to see how these players shake out over the final month.
