Pittsburgh City Council honored former Pirates shortstop and longtime Pitt broadcaster Dick Groat at its weekly meeting Tuesday, declaring June 12, 2018, “Dick Groat Day” at a ceremony attended by Groat, his family members and representatives from the Pirates and Pitt.
“This is home,” Groat said. “I’ve been to a lot of cities; I’ve lived in a few cities for short periods of time. Always couldn’t wait to get back here to my hometown of Pittsburgh. I’m so proud and impressed that you people would honor me in this manner. Thank you so very, very much.”
The resolution called Groat, who was born in Wilkinsburg and attended Swissvale High School, “perhaps the greatest athlete to come out of Pittsburgh.
