It didn’t matter that Gerrit Cole did not pitch his best game Wednesday night. The Pirates’ inability to produce runs continued and they lost to the Cincinnati Reds, 3-0, at PNC Park.
Against Reds starter Mike Leake and closer Aroldis Chapman, the Pirates had seven hits. They have scored five total runs during their five-game losing streak.
The closest the Pirates came to scoring was in the seventh inning, when two-out singles from Francisco Cervelli and pinch-hitter Corey Hart put a runner in scoring position. Gregory Polanco grounded weakly to Leake, whose throw hit Polanco in the back.
