The Pirates plan to recognize Major League Baseball umpire John Tumpane before their game Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, according to a club official. On Wednesday, Tumpane led an effort to convince a distressed woman from leaping from the Roberto Clemente Bridge into the Allegheny River. Tumpane has since received national attention.
Manager Clint Hurdle met Tumpane in a PNC Park hallway Thursday and thanked him.
“I told him I couldn’t be more proud of him,” Hurdle said. “We spend a lot of time on [news] things that don't need to be covered. This is something that needed to be covered.
