Pirates starter Ryan Vogelsong left today’s game after being hit in the head by a pitch.
Vogelsong came to the plate in the second inning with the bases loaded. With a 1-1 count, Colorado Rockies starter Jordan Lyles hit Vogelsong in the left side of his head. It was unclear if the ball struck Vogelsong’s face directly or hit his batting helmet.
Vogelsong fell to the ground in the batter’s box. Head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk tended to him, covering the left side of his face with a towel. Vogelsong was moving, and eventually sat up.
