In a minor transaction, the Pittsburgh Pirates have traded utility infielder Justin Sellers to the Chicago White Sox. In return, according to MLB.com's Scott Merkin, they will receive a player to be named later or cash. Either way, the return is unlikely to be anything of significant value. The White Sox just placed AAA second baseman Micah Johnson on the disabled list, so it seems likely that they made the move simply for minor league depth.
The Pirates purchased Sellers from the Cleveland Indians last offseason to provide middle infield depth, and he was in the running for a bench job this spring, but he spent most of the season on the disabled list with an injury to his Achilles tendon, and by the time he recovered, there was no longer any role for him in the organization.
