The Pirates and Cubs will don throwback uniforms Friday night as part of the Pirates’ annual Negro Leagues Heritage Game at PNC Park.
The Pirates’ uniforms will honor the Homestead Grays, which split their time between the Pittsburgh region and Washington D.C., in the early 20th century. The Grays won three Negro League World Series titles in the 1940s.
The 7:05 p.m. game will mark the seventh time the Pirates will wear the retro uniforms, with the last time coming Sept. 9, 2016 against the Cincinnati Reds.
The Cubs will wear Leland Giants jerseys, an ode to the Cubs’ 1909 series against the Giants, the first time the Cubs played against an African-American team.
