CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pirates, 11-10, in 12 innings Friday at Wrigley Field on a walk-off bloop hit that Gregory Polanco tripped attempting to catch.
Starlin Castro and Miguel Montero hit one-out singles against Mark Melancon in the bottom of the 10th. Melancon intentionally walked Jorge Soler to load the bases. Sean Rodriguez, who was playing left field, came in to create a five-man infield, playing in on the grass to cut off the run. Matt Szczur lined out to Gregory Polanco in shallow right, and Polanco threw out Castro by 20 feet for an inning-ending double play.
