Pirates sign outfielder Michael Saunders to minor-league deal

The Pirates on Wednesday signed outfielder Michael Saunders to a minor-league deal with an invitation to big-league spring training.

The 31-year-old Canadian was an All-Star with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2016, a season in which he played 140 games, hit 24 home runs and 32 doubles, and batted .253. Last season with the Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto, he hit .202 with six homers in 73 games.

He signed a one-year deal with Philadelphia in 2017, but the Phillies designated him for assignment and released him in June. He signed a minor-league deal with Toronto and was a September call-up.
