Via Pirates Prospects (sub. req'd), the Pirates have signed their 33rd round draft pick, RHP Austin Shields. According to John Manuel, Shields got all of the Pirates' remaining draft pool money, which was $105,000, which means he got a bonus of $205,000. Jon Heyman reports that the team had previously offered competitive balance round selection Nick Lodolo all of their remaining pool money, which for his slot amounted to an offer of about $1,750,000. Lodolo chose instead to attend Texas Christian University.
Shields was one of two remaining over-slot candidates from the Pirates' draft, the other being Austin Bodrato, a third baseman chosen in the 24th round.
