It wasn’t a high-scoring game, but it didn’t need to be.
A solid seven-inning performance by Tyler Anderson laid the groundwork for the Pirates’ 2-0 blanking of the Brewers at PNC Park this afternoon, their first shutout win since May.
Anderson (4-8) notched six strikeouts while giving up only three hits and walking two. He got himself out of trouble when he had to, and a timely double play turned by Michael Perez, Phillip Evans and Adam Frazier saved him as well.
Kevin Newman, whose homer bat has been quiet at PNC this season, hit a boomer over the left field fence in the bottom of the first to give the Bucs a lead they never relinquished.
