The Pirates blitzed rookie Chicago White Sox left-hander Carlos Rodon for seven runs in 3 2/3 innings, then buried his bullpen in an 18-hit, 11-0 blowout tonight at PNC Park for their fifth win in a row.
The Pirates’ all-Francisco battery fried the White Sox (28-34), as Francisco Liriano (4-5) struck out 12 and allowed just two hits in eight scoreless innings, and Francisco Cervelli reached base three times, including a two-run triple in the first.
Cervelli has caught 42 consecutive scoreless innings, the longest such streak in recorded Pirates history. He passed Manny Sanguillen, who caught 38 consecutive scoreless innings in May 1972.
