DETROIT -- The Pirates released right-handed John Holdzkom Monday, ending the former independent league pitcher's tenure with the organization.
The Pirates signed Holdzkom in 2014. He reached the majors that September and struck out 14 batters in nine innings.
Holdzkom spent 2015 in the minors, where he dealt with recurring shoulder issues.
The Pirates designated Holdzkom for assignment on opening day to clear a space on the 40-man roster. They had optioned him to the minors in spring training after concerns about his health because of reduced velocity.
