Three weeks after acquiring right-hander Allen Webster from the Arizona Diamondbacks for cash considerations, the Pirates released him, further thinning their starting-pitching depth.
Webster, 25, was the Los Angeles Dodgers' 18th-round draft pick in 2008 and emerged as a promising prospect in stints with the Dodgers and Boston Red Sox.
“Allen is a prospect that we’ve liked in the past, we liked in a scouting look this season,” general manager Neal Huntington said in late November.
Webster had a 6.13 ERA in 28 major-league appearances, 23 starts. Out of minor-league options, he was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks in November.
