The Pirates gave their bullpen boost today by recalling right-hander Jared Hughes from his rehab assignment and optioning righty Rob Scahill to Class AAA Indianapolis.
Hughes, the 6-foot-7 reliever with a 2.12 ERA over 139 appearances the past two seasons, strained his lat muscle midway through spring training this season and started the year on the 15-day disabled list.
Hughes struggled in spring training, allowing eight runs in 3 2/3 innings, and also fared rather poorly at Indianapolis. He gave up seven hits and five runs over six innings during his rehab assignment.
Scahill pitched six times for the Pirates this month and gave up four runs in six innings.
