The Pirates recalled Class AAA Indianapolis right-hander Wilfredo Boscan prior to tonight’s game and optioned infielder Steve Lombardozzi to Indianapolis.
During Saturday’s 14-inning game, the bullpen had to cover 7 2/3 innings. Six pitchers, including long reliever Vance Worley, entered the game, so the Pirates opted to play one position player short for the final game before the All-Star break.
Boscan had a 3.87 ERA in 16 games, 15 of them starts, with Indianapolis. He joined the Pirates previously this season but did not pitch and has yet to appear in the majors in his nine-year professional career.
