BRADENTON, Fla. — The Pirates have placed Bryce Brentz on outright waivers, according to a source.
Brentz is out of minor league options and had a chance to crack the opening day roster as a power bat off the bench, but he has struggled this spring, slashing .250/.362/.350 in 17 games.
Jose Osuna still may crack the opening day roster with the fifth bench spot, but the Pirates have recently said they may carry only four bench players on opening day.
The Pirates acquired Brentz from the Boston Red Sox in February.
