Pirates prospect Mitchell Tolman, a second baseman with Class AA Altoona, was suspended 50 games by MLB after receiving a second positive test for “a drug of abuse” in violation of the minor league drug policy.
The suspension is effective at the beginning of the season.
The Pirates picked Tolman, 23, out of Oregon in the seventh round of the 2015 draft. He reached Class AA for three games last season after slashing .267/.364/.393 in 115 games with high-A Bradenton.
Tolman is the third member of the Pirates organization to be suspended for violating baseball’s drug policy this offseason.
