In an effort limit the workload of two young pitchers, the Pirates will skip the next starts of Chad Kuhl and Jameson Taillon. Drew Hutchison will start in Kuhl’s place Saturday against the Reds. Gerrit Cole was already going to start Monday, but the Pirates will skip, rather than push back, Taillon’s next turn in the rotation.
“It’s basically the innings, just modifying and taking care of the innings pitched,” manager Clint Hurdle said.
Taillon has 1492/3 innings between the minors and majors this season, the highest in a season in his career, and he also threw only 35 to 40 innings between sim games and instructs last year following a year of zero innings.
