The Pirates claimed right-hander Yoervis Medina off waivers today from the Chicago Cubs, adding another arm to their bullpen.
Medina, 27, has a 3.08 ERA in 146 major-league appearances. He signed with the Seattle Mariners as an amateur free agent in 2005 and debuted in 2013. He was acquired by the Cubs in May for catcher Welington Castillo.
In 32 appearances at the Class AAA level last season, Medina was 1-2 with a 5.62 ERA. His ERA dropped to 4.71 in 17 games in the majors. His average fastball velocity, according to Fangraphs.com, was 92.8 mph.
Medina was strong in his first two seasons with the Mariners.
