Pirates notebook: Ramirez begins cram course as first baseman

ST. LOUIS — Aramis Ramirez will begin working out at first base in New York City this weekend, a move designed to give the Pirates another option at first and to give Ramirez defensive flexibility once injured infielders Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer return from the disabled list.

"It can't hurt to take a look at it," manager Clint Hurdle said this afternoon. "There's nothing I could come up, so why not do it? When we reached out to him and thought about it, he was all in and engaged for it."
