CHICAGO — In 2003, a New York Yankees scout signed Francisco Cervelli, then 16, after watching him make just one throw to second base.
In seven seasons with the Yankees, Cervelli wasn’t known for shutting down the opposing running game. He threw out 19 percent of would-be base stealers. So far this season, though, the number is even lower: 19 percent.
The Chicago Cubs stole five times with Cervelli behind home plate Tuesday night, including two double-steals in the same inning. Teams have stolen 21 times with Cervelli catching and been caught stealing just five times.
