PHILADELPHIA — Steve Lombardozzi came in cold to pinch-run for Francisco Cervelli in the ninth inning Wednesday night of a 3-2 game, and he immediately made something happen.
Considering Philladelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon’s slow delivery, Lombardozzi had his eye on stealing second. Papelbon knew it and threw over to first once, then twice. His third pickoff was wild, and Lombardozzi scrambled to third.
Lombardozzi, however, was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Jeff Francoeur to end the game, but afterward Lombardozzi shrugged, smiled and answered a few questions.
