Pirates notebook: Jared Hughes returns, looks to boost bullpen

“The Fireman” is back in the building.

The Pirates gave their bullpen a boost Saturday by recalling right-hander Jared Hughes from his rehab assignment and optioning right-hander Rob Scahill to Class AAA Indianapolis.

Hughes, the 6-foot-7 reliever nicknamed by manager Clint Hurdle for his penchant for putting out fires on the bases, strained his lat muscle midway through spring training and started the season on the 15-day disabled list.

“I’m just so happy to be pain-free and firing on all cylinders,” Hughes said.

He had a 2.12 ERA in 139 appearances the past two seasons.
